Ever wondered what separates fair, good and great writing? Well, it is not just one thing, but rather, a combination of things. In this Lit course I learnt about the 7 traits of good writing, which include ideas, word choice, organisation, sentence fluency, voice, conventions and presentation. Each trait is an important element that must be observed, in order to produce a flawless piece of writing.

As each trait was discussed, I realised a lot of these elements I naturally include in my writing, like organisation, sentence fluency or ideas, however, not being completely cognizant of its significance. I particularly like the trait of voice, because it highlights how unique writing is to each of us. It refers to the writers personal style of writing that can be used to connect with the reader and draw them into the message being conveyed.

I am indeed grateful for this new insights about the 7 traits of writing, so I will become more conscious about them in any piece of writing I undertake. I will also pass on this information to my students, to equip them with the necessary tools to develop their writing competency. It also helps me to provide useful feedback when assessing their writing.

Below is a link to a video that explains the traits of writing in a simple way, that can be used with your students. I found it useful, let me know if you do as well.

  2. Shevon and Laureen, you are right, this video captures the writing traits in a simple yet effective way. As I watched it, I thought that in showing students the video, this can be done in parts, over several lessons. As each aspect of the writing traits is addressed, that section of the video can be shown and then built upon during the lesson. Thanks for sharing the video Shevon.

However, ladies, from the lesson, I noticed areas of improvement for me are, voice, word choice and presentation. Knowing this, I have made a mental commitment to place more conscious emphasis on these areas as I write, going forward. What about you ladies, are there any areas that you have noticed needs improvement in your writing?

  3. Hi ladies. Laureen you are welcome, I am glad that you enjoyed the video as much as I did. Erica interesting question you asked. Now that I am in teacher's college, I have realised one of the writing traits I am challenged with is word choice. I sometimes find it difficult to find the most appropriate word to convey the feeling or idea that I want to express. Also, I try to avoid using bland, overused words and phrases, but sometimes finding an alternative takes a while for me. However, what I normally do to help me, is to google synonyms for the words I want to replace, which presents a list of other words that have the same or similar meaning.
