All About Books: By Shevon Whiteman -Joseph

One of the writing strategies we discussed in this LIT 102 class is the creation of 'All About Me' books. This particular strategy stood out to me because it is geared toward young children. I have spent all of my years in teaching, working with students at the preschool and kindergarten levels, and as such, I am always looking for creative ways to get these kids writing.

All about me books will allow my students to share information about themselves (e.g. their names, family, likes), or other topics of interest, while still teaching them the conventions of book writing. It can be tailored to suit students as early as preschool, by providing a simple format for the students to follow and also used with older children, by having them share more ideas. This is an excellent strategy to motivate my students to write and experience early successes in writing.

Have you ever used this writing strategy with your students before?

Below is a link to a  video that shows an  example of an all about me book, that can be created with preschool/Kindergarten students.

  1. Hi Shevon, I have never used this strategy with my students, however, after learning about it, I'm exciting to have them try it. Though my students are not young children as yours are, they sometimes struggle with describing themselves which is why I'm certain the All About Books will be of tremendous benefit to them. Added, traditional test taking is often a challenge for my students, however, the All About Book strategy will help them to demonstrate understanding in a less intimidating, fun way.

  2. Hello Erica, I am glad you also found this strategy useful for the students you work with. Please let me know how they respond to it, when you do try it out.

    1. I surely will. Let's commit to staying in touch and comparing stories. I believe we are well on our way to making a greater impact on our students with this storehouse of information we are gaining in these courses.

  3. Hi Shevon, it would be remiss of me if I do not pay homage to our Lit 102 course for the many strategies we have been exposed to thus far. 'All About Me' books no exception. Although I worked with students at the lowest level, I have never used this strategy. It is, therefore, necessary as an educator, that we gain exposure to a wide repertoire of techniques and strategies that would assist our aspiring writers. Furthermore, too many times, as teachers, we limit our students and stifle their creativity due to a lack of knowledge. I am hopeful that with the wealth of knowledge exposed to in this course, we will be driven to engage our students to the best of our ability. I am excited to try this strategy with my students. Imagine, I have already begun to picture the faces of emergent writers who can use drawings in their 'All About Me' book to tell a beautiful story.
